Biluochun Tea: A Classic Chinese Green Tea

Biluochun Tea is produced in Jiangsu Province, China, and is one of China’s top ten famous teas, belonging to the green tea category. The name “Biluochun” refers to the tea leaves’ spiral shape, resembling a green conch, while “Chun” signifies that the tea is harvested in the spring. The best quality Biluochun comes from Dongting East Mountain and Dongting West Mountain near Lake Tai, hence it is often called Dongting Biluochun.

A Classic Chinese Green Tea: Biluochun Tea

The origin of Biluochun Tea can be traced back 300 years. According to ancient records, a few wild tea trees grew on Biluofeng in Dongting Mountain. Local residents often picked the tea leaves, and one day, during a bountiful harvest, a young girl placed the tea leaves in her bosom due to a lack of tea baskets. The warmth of her body caused the leaves to emit a fragrant aroma. Upon learning of this, the emperor named the tea “Biluochun,” and it became a famous tea. Biluochun Tea is beloved for its delicate, curled appearance, the fine fuzz covering its leaves, the fresh and invigorating tea liquor, and its fragrant aroma.

Production Method

The production of BiLuoChun tea is meticulous and spans from March to April. The best tea leaves are one bud and one leaf, carefully selected to remove any inferior leaves. The production process consists of three main steps: Panning (pan-frying the leaves), rolling, and drying. These steps are traditionally completed in the same pan. This traditional handmade method gives Bi Luo Chun tea its unique quality and flavor.

Brewing Method for Biluochun Tea

Brewing Biluochun Tea is simple. Use water at about 75-85°C to preserve the tea’s tender aroma and freshness. Start by moistening the leaves with a small amount of hot water, then add the appropriate amount of hot water and let it steep for 2-3 minutes before tasting. The robust buds of Biluochun Tea will gradually sink during brewing, releasing their fragrance. The finest Biluochun can even be cold-brewed with mineral or spring water to showcase its superior quality.
