Types of Chinese Green Tea

Green tea is the earliest developed and most widely produced type of tea in China, with numerous well-known varieties, totaling dozens, and hundreds of sub-varieties. Not only does green tea come in many forms, but it also represents the highest production volume among all Chinese teas. Representative types of Chinese green tea include West Lake Longjing, Biluochun, Huangshan Maofeng, Xinyang Maojian, and Taiping Houkui.

Also known as West Lake Longjing, this is one of China’s top ten famous teas and belongs to the green tea category. It is renowned for its unique fragrance, sweet and mellow taste, and bright tea liquor.

Grown on the Dongting Mountain in Taihu, China, Biluochun is also one of China’s top ten famous teas. This green tea is known for its delicate appearance and fresh, delicious taste.

The most distinctive feature of this tea is its pearl-like shape, classified as a green tea. It is one of the rare bead-shaped green teas and is named Pingshui Zhu Tea after Pingshui, the main distribution hub for this tea.

Produced in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, despite its name, which translates to “White Tea,” it is actually a green tea. It is named “White Tea(Bai Cha)” because the tea buds are white in color.

This is one of China’s top ten famous teas, belonging to the green tea category, and is produced in the Huangshan region of Anhui Province. It was first created by the Xie Yutai Tea Shop during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty.

Produced in Xinyang City, Henan Province, Xinyang Maojian is characterized by its tightly twisted, elegant shape and abundant white hairs, which give it the name “Maojian.”

Originating from Huangshan City in Anhui Province, China, Taiping Houkui is a famous green tea known for its straight, large, long, and flat appearance.

This is one of China’s top ten famous teas, classified as green tea. Its unique characteristic is that the buds and stems are removed, leaving only the tea leaves, which are shaped like melon seeds.
